Five years. Four ages. One world that remembers all of it.

I have kept these books a long time

Three ages have been written and closed. This is the fourth, and it is not finished — it is being written now, by whoever comes through that door. You, shortly, if you have the patience for an old man and a short list of questions.

Understand that nothing here is new-made. Every road was walked flat by somebody. Every town was an idea before it was a place. You will come across ruins with names still legible on them, and most of those names belong to people who are still about.

The land does not go easy on anyone. It is cold at night and the dark is full of what the dark is always full of. But it is honest: what you put into it stays put. Nobody comes along afterwards and unmakes it, and nothing is swept away to start again.

One thing I say plainly, because everyone asks. There is an age to this — fourteen years and upward. Younger than that and I will send you home again. Older, and you conduct yourself as though the young ones are listening, because they are, and because that is most of why the peace holds.

Seven questions · Ten origins

Nobody arrives as nobody

Everyone sits with me first. I will not ask what you would like to be — anyone can like. I will ask what you would do, seven times over, and I will know if you are guessing at what sounds best.

  • A warrior in red armour with sword and heraldic shield, in savanna grass at sunset VanguardWarrior
  • A scout in green leather raising a spyglass among birch woodland PathfinderScout
  • A farmer in yellow leather with an iron hoe, standing in open plains Green ThumbFarmer
  • A miner in grey leather holding a pickaxe at the mouth of a cave ProspectorMiner
  • A survivor in white leather amid snowy spruce forest and drifting snow Frost WardenCold survivor
  • A diver in cyan leather and turtle shell helm on a bright shoreline Deep DiverOcean explorer
  • A hooded figure in black leather in dark forest at dusk ShadowwalkerRogue
  • A scholar in purple leather among glowing lush cave growth ArcanistMystic
  • A traveller in orange leather with a saddle, crossing desert badlands WandererNomad
  • A hunter in brown leather with a bow and a tamed wolf, in dense jungle BeastmasterHunter

At the end I name the two you most resemble and you choose between them. I have been wrong before. Not often, and the choosing is yours regardless.

What you settle on decides what I put in your hands before you leave, which country will feel like yours, and one thing you can do that nobody else can. Out there you will come to know people by the colour they wear, long before you are near enough to ask a name.

What you will find out there

There is room, and there is work

One land, joined up

Ice to sand without ever losing the ground under you. It has an edge, and you will feel it eventually, but not soon.

Coin, and uses for it

There is money here and people who want it. Keep a shop, keep it stocked, and let others do the walking.

Ground you can hold

Set a claim on what you build and it answers to you. You say who comes in, who may open what, and what happens to anyone who tries otherwise.

Work, if you want it

People need things fetched, cleared and killed, and they are not stingy. New notices go up daily, weekly and with the turn of the month.

It gets written down

That is my part. Build something worth a page and it gets a page, and it outlasts both of us.

Somebody charted it

Every league of it, and kept current — map.britannica.world. Do not ask me how they manage it.

“That is the whole of it, near enough. You have read plenty and the light is going. The door is that way, and it was never locked.”
